On the 25th of March 2025, approximately 100 participants representing political leadership, government and bureaucracy, development and public health agencies, academia, private sector, and civil society met in Oslo to discuss Nordic leadership in global health. The half-day program featured keynotes and panel discussions with Nordic experts and leaders in global health, followed by thematic workshops where every participant took part in structured discussions on how the Nordics can drive future action in global health.
Across the day’s keynotes, panels, and workshops, participants stressed that Nordic political leaders must forge a coalition of the willing to safeguard the hard-won progress in global health and rights achieved in recent decades. We cannot let health become polarized, it is something universal. The core message was clear: the daunting challenges and recent aid cuts confronting global health must not paralyze us—they should galvanize us.
Two overarching conclusions stood out when discussions closed:
- The Nordic countries should continue to stand up for progress in global health and our values.
- The Nordic countries should double down on fixing long-dicussed challenges in the global health architecture (as described in detail in the Lusaka agenda) - they must use opportunities arising from the current crisis.
Looking ahead, the Nordic countries must stand shoulder to shoulder, turning their shared commitment to equity and human rights into decisive, collective action for global health.
This summary report provides a brief and non-exhaustive overview of the global health context at the time of the symposium, highlighting some of the urgent demands and immediate crises that formed the backdrop for the participants’ discussions. The thematic workshops summaries offer insight into the lively discussions among participants on three key topics: SRHR, Immunization, and AMR. The report captures policy ideas, alternatives, and proposals that emerged from these discussions.
