After the Call: Building International Institutions for Controlling Frontier AI

‍

The UN's scientific AI panel, Norwegian politicians, leading researchers, and the AI companies themselves are warning about the dangers of AI development. While the technology is advancing at record speed, we lack effective policy tools to regulate it.

‍

In September, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb initiated an international call for better control over the most advanced AI models. 31 leaders have signed the appeal, which, among other things, encourages UN member states to consider an international AI institution.

‍

The appeal is an important and correct first step, but the real work starts now. How do we move from an appeal to action? And what could an international AI institution look like?

‍

Langsikt invites Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide to a conversation about the risks, the responsibility, and the way forward. He will be joined by Professor Robert Trager, Director of Oxford University’s Martin AI Governance Initiative. Trager is one of the world's leading experts on international AI governance and institutional design.

‍

Time: Monday, November 2, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM. We will host a networking session after the event.

‍
Location: Central Oslo (to be confirmed soon)
