Norway needs a foreign policy for artificial intelligence

In June, the US demanded that Anthropic block its latest AI models from all foreign nationals. The case demonstrated how easily the US can cut off access to technology we are becoming increasingly dependent on.

Other European countries are now positioning themselves in foreign policy by developing overarching international AI strategies, larger tech teams within foreign ministries, and international alliances to reduce dependency. In Norway, however, the foreign policy apparatus lacks structure, strategy, capacity, and expertise.

Langsikt is launching the report "A Norwegian foreign policy for artificial intelligence – why and how Norway should position itself in a new security policy reality," featuring ten recommendations for what the government should do.

Klas Pettersen, Director of the AI research center SimulaMet, will present the geopolitical backdrop, before Ram Eirik Glomseth from Langsikt introduces the report. NUPI researcher Niels Nagelhus Schia will then discuss the security policy implications for Norway in 2026.

The program begins at 8:30 AM and lasts until approximately 9:30 AM, followed by coffee and mingling until 10:00 AM.
